The classical “discrete” fluctuation model for inelastic collisional interactions is used to symmetrize the Zener equation for vibration-translation energy transfers in gases and the Bohr-Bethe equations for energy loss and radiative transitions of charged particles in stopping media. The resulting equations are compared to the available quantum mechanical results, due to Jackson and Mott and to Bethe and Heitler respectively. The “continuum” fluctuation model is used to calculate “semi-classical” Gaunt factors in the simplest Bremsstrahlung equations. The results are compared to the quantum mechanical equation due to Elwert. The conclusion is drawn that classical mechanics can still compete with quantum mechanics in some practical respects.
