The purpose is to examine the actual improvements which can be achieved by new proposals for either gas turbine plant configuration or burned fuel. This analysis will consider the changes in compressor and turbine efficiency and in air flow delivery according to new matching conditions. As a consequence, a more accurate estimation of variations in both mechanical output and thermal efficiency levels can be expected.

Abstract

Innovative gas turbine and combined power plants configurations involve changes in turbomachinery operation related to enhanced thermodynamic cycles. New perspectives also arise from the utilization of non-conventional fuels which allow a more rational energy source consumption. A typical example is represented by coal-derived gases as an encouraging alternative to the widely diffused natural gas fueling systems in gas turbine based plants. In recent years, the authors have dealt with several topics related to variations in fuel adopted or in thermodynamic cycle features. The environmental impact, in terms of nitric oxide formation, was also examined. In this paper an extension of previously proposed plant analyses is presented, with the inclusion of compressor and turbine operating characteristics.
