PCR approach was used in order to investigate the presence of plant DNA in somatic cells pellets from fresh or stored milk of goats fed either conventional or genetically modified (GM) soybean meal. Compared to fresh samples, DNA extracted from samples stored at -20°C was lower (ng/µl: 20.8 vs 51.6) and of low quality (A260/A280 ratio: 1.4 vs 1.7). Also both high copy number chloroplast gene (trnL) and low copy number specific for soybean (lectin) gene were detected in lower percentage in stored samples. The transgenic fragments (35S promoter and CP4 EPSPS gene), found only in the milk of group fed GM soybean meal, were detected in higher percentage in fresh samples.
