The design experience of the Master Course in Architectural Project for the Historic City is an example of "construction" of a new system of urban spaces in the insula of Largo d'Avellino, an area of great interest in the Historic Centre of Naples. The redesign of this specific insula defines a strategy which involves further "pieces" of the Historic Centre, outlining a wider system of urban textures and architectural connections. The suitable scale for the intervention can be considered the dimension of the whole block with its inner public spaces. The spaces that are thus created, escaping traditional classification - halfway between interior and exterior, roofed and dangerously open, “sudden” and unusual - can be designed as architectural elements, involved in the reconnection of contemporary architectures in the Historic City. These hybrid typologies of open space - covered square, rooftop terrace - combining traditional aspects and new terms, can be maybe considered as first outposts of “contemporaneity” in the Historic City which needs to be accepted and verified.
