Through this article we question the function of social belonging based on an examination of the sense of community. For the last 30 years this construct has best described the bond between the individual and their context. It particularly this qualitative research emphasises identity and belonging as either distinctiveness or pride among residents, exploring their minimal role in building communities. It introduces community distrust as a specific dimension in order to explain the active bonds between individuals and territorial community.
