Abstract ________________________________________________________ Genere e generazione. Teaching of the Greek Tragedy and Citizenship Education In AA.VV., Archetypes of the Feminine in Classical Greece, pp. 97‐137, Unicopli, Milan 2008 ________________________________________________________ The aim of the paper is to re‐examine the relationship between genders and the generation role beginning from the original scene of the constitution of the City-States and of the transformations of family and social relationships in a community governed by democracy. The literary genres of Tragedy and Ethics, developed in Greece at the same time bringing up the reform of the religious spirit and redefining the legal framework together with the behavior rules in social relations, are compared with each other. Tragedy concerns family. Tragedy is always at home. Ethics concerns city. The leitmotiv of tragedy is the children’s predestination to pay for their fathers misdeeds. On the contrary, ethics is presented as the speech that the father addresses to his son in the form of advices about living knowledge. The term of reference for the tragedy is the female character, the daughter. The one for the ethics is the character of the friend, with whom the son is called to recognize himself and to go along in the social act. The female characters are called to break off the tragedy scene by refusing themselves to the generation. The female characters are ungenerative. The symbolic names express this clearly: Antigone, antigenos, the virgin, the one who becomes her father’s “sister”; the crazy mother Medea, who kills her sons; the father’s precious joy Electra, who kills her mother. Woman’s generative property is thus called to squirm, to be denied, sacrificed to heal fathers sins. On the opposite side, Ethics has the son as target-character. From Aristotle to Savater all the books concerning ethics are dedicated to the sons, natural or adopted: from Cicero to St. Paul, from Epicurus to Augustine. Always it deals with the how-to-behave, keeping happiness as politics ultimate aim. In the background it works on one hand the dynamics of "Ethos", the inward "self", the inhabiting itself of the Ethics, which recognizes itself in the other, the familiar stranger, the friend. On the other hand it works the "Heim", the homely, the family, the “heimliches” which overturns in the “unheimliches”, the infamiliare, the uncanny. If on the ethic scene is given inner daimon, the devil, with a meaning of the mixture between human and divine or human and nonhuman. The symbolic shift of the daimon in Christian translation and tradition implies a new, radical settlement of consciousness and social reasons. In the essay is shown the transition from family relationships, generally ruled by the father/daughter line, to the social ones, ruled by the parent/child line. In this study is therefore represented the change in the generation function, which undergoes a shift in the line, most evidently expressed in the speech exposed by Diotima to Socrates in Plato's dialogue Symposium, where in foreground is generating in the beautiful, “tokos en kalo”. Index of paragraphs: Unnatural Innocence / Desire and Guilt / Anti-gender / Generation and Memory / People, masks, Ghosts: the Interiorization of Death / From Venus and Ares to Apollo and Athena: the new Gender Relations Imagery/ New Gods for a new Time / Generating Filia / Listening to Invisible / Possible and Impossible / Clinic and History / Ethos and Heim / The Dream of Existence and the Desire for Life.
