Forty buffalo heifers of approximately 19 months of age were used. Subjects were randomly and equally allocated for 12 weeks to 4 groups. Thus, the experimental design was a 2 x 2 factorial with two space allowances (2.3 indoor slatted floor and 2.3 indoor slatted floor + 15 outdoor yard m2/head) and two dietary protein levels (8.9% and 13.4% of DM). Protein level did not affect the behavioural activities of the animals. Conversely, animals with an outdoor paddock lay with a higher number of outstretched legs than calves provided with less free space (P<0.01). Although animals with an outdoor yard ate less frequently than heifers kept at restricted space (P<0.05), the average daily weight gain was not influenced neither by the provision of an outdoor paddock nor by protein level. Neither immune responses (skin test and antibody response to KLH) nor the cortisol response to exogenous ACTH were affected by space allowance and protein level.
