The territory of Naples Province has an ancient history (fist settlements date back 9th century BC), a very high population density (>2600 inh./km2 per a total of 3M of inhabitants) and an intense tourist flow (10.9M of presences in 2007). In this area the most important agricultural landscapes are linked to horticulture and fruit-culture that in many cases derive from very ancient cropping systems. The most famous ones are the Roman “centuriazione” that is the orthogonal land delimitation with the fields bordered by tree rows, made for land assignments to the Centurions; the grape “married” to the poplar (grapes left growing on the poplar until to 15 m) that represent one of the few traces of Etruscan civilization in this area; the terraced orchards that characterize the Sorrento peninsula and the Gulf isles (Ischia, Capri) since from several centuries; the apricot and apple cultivation that is known since from the ancient roman age. In this context, these landscapes must be absolutely protected since they are not renewable and plays several roles: cultural (testimony of historical heritage), environmental (conservation of biodiversity, compensation of the urban pressure, green belt as around the Naples City) and economical (positive externality that improves the added-value of the typical agricultural products) roles that are fundamental for improving the life quality of population.
