Discussion of some changes taking place in Late Latin in the encoding of transitivity: the active/neutral realignment of grammatical relations and the concomitant reorganization of voice distinctions. It is argued that these changes probably reflect the rise of head-marking patterns in a predominantly dependent-marking language such as Latin.
