"Open Doors to Monuments" was born in May 1992 even though, during the first two years, it was not run by the public administration but it was promoted and managed by a private actor called Fondazione Napoli Novantanove. In 1994 the project was institutionalised under the responsibility of the city Council in the person of major Antonio Bassolino. In fact, the third edition was called "Open Doors to Naples" in order to emphasize the role of the local Council of Naples in the promotion of the event. Another important turning point in the planning was the 1995 May festival, when there was an extension of the duration of the happening from a week-end to the all month. This is the reason why even the name of the event changed to May of Monuments. This name, therefore, is the one that the local administration still uses and the motto that Neapolitans always refer to in order to summarize the entire period from 1992 to 2005. The paper will focus on the following steps: – to underline the most important steps of the policy and to tell you the most relevant contents of the project in chronological order – to assess the effects of the policy in the perspective of the regenerative strategy – to draw my conclusions.
