Aim of this paper is to study the influence of composite structure on drilling mechanism. Experimental data are obtained drilling with traditional tools, glass fibre reinforced plastics panels characterized by different fibre volume fractions contents. It was found that the drilling force, the chip morphology and the cut surface morphology, for the range of the cutting conditions adopted, are affected not only by the medium fibre volume fraction but, principally, by the fiber content varying along the thickness. These results permit some practical considerations to control the cutting force to avoid the delamination.

Abstract

Aim of this paper is to study the influence of composite structure on drilling mechanism. Experimental data are obtained drilling with traditional tools, glass fibre reinforced plastics panels characterized by different fibre volume fractions contents. It was found that the drilling force, the chip morphology and the cut surface morphology, for the range of the cutting conditions adopted, are affected not only by the medium fibre volume fraction but, principally, by the fiber content varying along the thickness. These results permit some practical considerations to control the cutting force to avoid the delamination.
