The influence of steam treatment on elastic properties of sintered iron parts was investigated. After steam oxidation, the mechanical properties results varied; there is a great increase in hardness, a porosity reduction, and an improvement of tensile strength in any direction. As literature reports a lot of papers about the relationship between ultrasound propagation velocity and mechanical properties of porous metal, in this paper this method is extended to sintered steam oxidised parts; in particular, the relationship between ultrasound propagation velocity and Young's modulus after treatment.

Abstract

The influence of steam treatment on elastic properties of sintered iron parts was investigated. After steam oxidation, the mechanical properties results varied; there is a great increase in hardness, a porosity reduction, and an improvement of tensile strength in any direction. As literature reports a lot of papers about the relationship between ultrasound propagation velocity and mechanical properties of porous metal, in this paper this method is extended to sintered steam oxidised parts; in particular, the relationship between ultrasound propagation velocity and Young's modulus after treatment.
