Abstract. TherelationshipbetweenButlerB(1)-groups(aclassoftorsionfree Abelian groups of finite rank) and their tents (certain finite Z2-representations) is used to solve constructively the base change decomposition problem, aimed at realizing every base change as a succession of base changes, each of which changes at most two base types. For this purpose a finer analysis is needed of the way to attach a tent to the group; this also allows to determine all groups with a given tent.
