In this paper, I will briefly review the main statistical techniques used nowadays in physics education research and call for an increased use of quantitative studies in order to find consensus about the obtained results within the community. To this end, I will also envisage possible new research avenues for physics education research building on the possibilities offered by advanced statistical methods.
