Mountain Non-figurative Engravings and Paintings: A Comparative Perspective between Central Alps and Mid-Tunisian Mountains

Depending on the graphic, archaeological, and chronological context, several interpretations have been attributed to mountain non- gurative engravings and paintings: cup-marks/cupules and punctuations. This chapter proposes a comparative approach between mountain areas on the northern and southern sides of the Mediterranean—the Alps and the Tunisian mid-mountains—in order to identify correspondences in the meaning and perception of this form of visual culture. In the analysed areas, non- gurative representations are particularly interesting because they are referring to the perception of mountain territory. The chapter aims to show the strong relation these marks have with the morphology and human movements, even comparing two environments as different as the central southern Alps and mid-Tunisian mountains.
