The article points out the important presence of icons in the narrative cycles of the codex Vitr. 26-2 of the Biblioteca Nacional de de España (Skylitzes Matritensis) as a possible reflection of real iconic objects in the Siculo-Calabrian sphere. Extant icons, either panel or mural, as well as lost yet documented ones are discussed, in order to explore their historical and cultic value, grounding the perception of such objects in the context where the manuscript was illustrated.
