The essay reconstructs aspects and moments of reflection inherent in the Spanish imperial model that developed in 18th-century Neapolitan culture. In particular, it emphasises that in the late 18th century – thanks to the contributions of authors such as Genovesi, Longano, Filangieri, Torcia and Galanti – the Neapolitan Enlightenment did not limit itself to a passive reception of themes and topics developed elsewhere, but sought to offer reflections and formulate opinions that arose from a profound rethinking of the historical experience of Spanish rule in Italy. Overall, the judgement on the Spanish monarchy was less unanimous than is generally thought.
