This paper examines the figure of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus as a controversial and “subversive” consul in the late Roman Republic. It analyzes his political trajectory, marked by ambiguity between aristocratic alignment and popular support, and his role in challenging the Sullan order. Particular attention is given to his actions in Sicily and his attempts to gain consensus through popular measures. Ultimately, Lepidus emerges as a reflection of the deep institutional and social tensions that contributed to the crisis of the Republic.
