In the Dionysiaca Nonnus widely exploits the narrative potential of paradox. I focus on the paradoxical female portraits that are found in the poem. The most notable case is that of Aphrodite at the loom (24, 237-329), but the motif emerges in several other passages. To shape such portraits, Nonnus adopts a series of devices: e.g., rhetorical rheseis, synkriseis with other characters, use of epithets, antithesis, intertextual engagement.

Abstract
In the Dionysiaca Nonnus widely exploits the narrative potential of paradox. I focus on the paradoxical female portraits that are found in the poem. The most notable case is that of Aphrodite at the loom (24, 237-329), but the motif emerges in several other passages. To shape such portraits, Nonnus adopts a series of devices: e.g., rhetorical rheseis, synkriseis with other characters, use of epithets, antithesis, intertextual engagement.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
