The essay analyzes Spike Jonze's first music videos from the early 1990s up to The Suburbs, a 2010 work for the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, considered here as both a poetic and tragic synthesis of the director's gaze on the urban landscape and American culture. The aim of the contribution is to reconstruct the evolution of Jonze's narrative and sensitivity towards the American city, its places, its myths, and its unspeakable nightmares
