The role of Green Public Procurement in limiting the environmental impact of sport events

The Green Public procurement constitutes an important tool to promote the use of greener products and services by the public authorities and, therefore, to achieve environmental policy goals relating to climate change, biodiversity loss, resource efficiency and sustainable production and consumption. Procurement activities occur throughout the lifecycle of a major sport event, from the bidding phase through to the competition itself, and cover an enormous range of goods and services including infrastructures (stadium, lodging, transport infrastructures), sporting equipment, apparel, food and beverages, and even the gold, silver and bronze raw materials used for medals. The creation and sharing of guidelines and good practices could start to assess some GPP criteria also for the sport sector. In this aim, the cooperation between the European Commission with the IOC and the several Federation could be crucial.
