The school “Vincenzo Diomede Fresa”, in the heart of the “Old City” of Bari, is a relevant example of rationalist architecture from the 1930s and a notable case of “settling” of contemporary architecture in an ancient centre. The building does not lack quality elements and materials of its time, but also clear references to the fascist regime and traces attributable to past ideologies. It is a "dissonant" architectural heritage that requires a difficult balance between protection and re-functionalisation; conservation of identity elements and respect for all the signs and meanings that time or man has added or subtracted.
