5th Symposium on Collaboration in Aircraft Design
12-14 October 2015, Naples, Italy
Organized by University of Naples Federico II, Department of Industrial Engineering
The Symposium is supported by:
CEAS Technical Committee Aircraft Design
The CEAS Technical Committee Aircraft Design (TCAD) started with the aim to better
harmonize research in aircraft design and combine this with
education in aircraft design by establishing a dedicated Technical Committee at CEAS.
In the past there was an Aeronautical Network
called "Vehicle Design". TCAD was formed out of this network. The activities of "Vehicle Design"
had so far been equivalent to the activities of the European Workshop on Aircraft Design Education (EWADE).
The DLR had already organized
three Symposia on Collaboration in Aircraft Design. Based on these symposia a complementary new activity focusing on research was added to EWADE to found the joint
CEAS Technical Committee Aircraft Design. The committee is organized in two sections
TCAD Research Section
TCAD Education Section
taking account of the two subjects - research and education.
The two section names are abbreviated based on their respective regular meeting
TCAD Research Section --- Symposium on Collaboration in Aircraft Design --- SCAD
TCAD Education Section --- European Workshop on Aircraft Design Education --- EWADE
A total of 4 symposia have been held, since the first edition in 2011.
The 5th edition will be hosted by the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII), University of Naples "Federico II"
from 12 to 14 October 2015.

Research and education in Aircraft Design have an old tradition at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples.
Prof. Gen. Umberto Nobile, the famous designer, pilot of airships, and polar explorer was also the founder of the Aerospace school in
Naples. Prof. Luigi Pascale, a former professor at Department of Industrial Engineering and famous designer of several light and commuter airplanes,
has continued this long tradition in aerospace studies and established himself a school in Aircraft Design.
Some of the most important Italian aerospace industries and research centers are located in Naples area and Campania region.
Among them it is worth to mention: Alenia Aeronautica (Pomigliano d'Arco), Piaggio Aerospace, Tecnam (Capua), OMASud (Capua),
Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA, Capua).
Engineering Faculty website
The Faculty of Engineering is one of the oldest and largest in Italy. The first school of Engineering was set in Naples in 1811
during the Napoleonic occupation of the Kingdom of Naples. Joachim Murat, King of Naples and Napoleon brother-in-law,
decreed the foundation of the "Scuola di Applicazione di Ponti e Strade" (School for the construction of bridges and roads)
on 4th March 1811. The school was modelled on the Ecole d'Application des ponts et chausses, which had been reorganized by Napoleon in 1804.
The school was first hosted in the historical buildings of the University and then moved to a new location in 1965, when the new building of
the Faculty of Engineering designed by the reknowned Italian architect Luigi Cosenza was opened in Fuorigrotta, a
relatively newer area of Naples. Since then the Faculty has developed fast and nowadays offers more than 20 degree courses, several MSc.
Programmes and Doctorate Schools. In 2011 the Faculty celebrated the 200th anniversary of its Foundation.
The Department of Industrial Engineering (DII) is a continuation of a long and glorious tradition in the study, research and dissemination
of aerospace disciplines. This tradition has its distant roots in the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, founded in 1926 by Prof. Gen.
Umberto Nobile, the famous designer and pilot of airships, and polar explorer. The DII, founded in January 2007, comes from the will of
the neapolitan academic aerospace community to collect a prestigious institution in the great legacy of aerospace research and education,
to promote a unified look and even more effective dissemination and the culture of the aerospace disciplines.
