This paper investigates the remarkable influence of Callimachus’ Aetia on the poetry of Gregory of Nazianzus, covering the full range of Gregory’s huge poetic output (hexameter and elegiac poems, iambic trimeter poems, and poems in other meters). Not only the Aetia prologue, but also several other parts of Callimachus’ elegiac collection, including its epilogue, prove to be a source of inspiration for Gregory, who appropriates the Callimachean antecedents and adapts them to his Christian message. Gregory borrows words, phrases, and expressions from the Aetia, some of which recur in his poems in connection with the same topics. In a few cases his references to the Aetia are particularly refined and allusive.
