This essay aims to define on the basis of literary sources the correct denomination of the throne room of Castel Nuovo in Naples, universally known today as “Sala dei Baroni”, because later in this room some rebel barons of the kingdom were captured by Ferrante I of Aragon after the Second Conspiracy of the Barons (1485-1486). However the contemporary literary sources constitute an appreciable support for motivating and contextualizing all the choices related to the construction of the room: for example, we can find the system of virtutes that the humanists created for celebrate the image of the king. It is not a case that this room was also called “Sala del Trionfo”, because here the celebration of the triumph of Alfonso was materializated in all its elements. From this point of view and on the basis of literary sources the appellation of “Sala dei Baroni” for this room seems therefore to be inappropriate and not in line with the symbolic meaning that Alfonso wanted to give to it.
