The heterogeneity characterising all living languages can be described according to different dimensions of variations, which can be regarded as part of a competent use of language. This pilot study aims to analyse the forms of such heterogeneity in German and Italian textbooks. Following research questions will be addressed: Which varieties are taught? What are the contexts, forms and attitudes of their use? How are they taught? Are they explained, translated, or integrated with metalinguistics references? The results can serve as starting point to other investigations including other textbooks belonging to higher of lower levels of competence.

Abstract

The heterogeneity characterising all living languages can be described according to different dimensions of variations, which can be regarded as part of a competent use of language. This pilot study aims to analyse the forms of such heterogeneity in German and Italian textbooks. Following research questions will be addressed: Which varieties are taught? What are the contexts, forms and attitudes of their use? How are they taught? Are they explained, translated, or integrated with metalinguistics references? The results can serve as starting point to other investigations including other textbooks belonging to higher of lower levels of competence.
