La Piazza del Mercato e le due ‘Piazze Commestibili’ ottocentesche a Caserta

Caserta was born around a wide crossroads of connecting roads; since 1407 this square hosted the weekly market. The Market Square became the hub of the urban center even when the city welcomed the most important event for its history, that is the arrival of Charles of Bourbon. With the Restoration began the separation between the administrative function, maintained in the main square, and the function of food’s trade, moved to an urban void transformed into the Piazzetta Commestibili. The two places, however, were still close; while starting from the 1880s the market area was moved away from the center towards the east, following the direction of urban growth.
