After offering a brief introduction to Nonnus of Panopolis and his epic poem Dionysiaca, this paper focuses on the lament for the oxherd Hymnus (killed by the huntress nymph Nicaea) in Dion. 15, 392-422 and explores how in this carefully structured passage Nonnus imitates and creatively reworks a set of Hellenistic bucolic models (Theocr. 1, 64-142; Bion 1; [Mosch.] 3), but also introduces innovations within the bucolic tradition, while both connecting Hymnus’ lament to the continuation of the story of Nicaea in book 16 and integrating it into the overall design of the Dionysiaca.
