Abstract

In today’s EcoWorld the legacy of the modern time requires to face the obsolescence of several architectural artifacts. The typical isolation of some city fragments has often favored its own abandonment. Out of these premises, unexpected temporal-spatial conditions needed to be interpreted in designing for re-use. The enclosure wall – architectural device which ensuring isolation enables abandonment – needs resemantization processes. This element defines outstanding internal and external perceptions, characterizing enclosed cities such as industrial settlements, cemeteries, slaughterhouses, psychiatric hospitals. Facing today’s ecological emergencies, this contribution wonders if it is possible to re-evaluate certain new cultural and identity values of this kind of heritage ‘isolated’, disposed and forgotten. Recognizing the acquirement of new values brought by the time of abandonment, these places might represent new potential ecological assets: refugia for the cities to come. The former psychiatric asylum Leonardo Bianchi located in North East of Naples is suggested as an inquiry and experimentations field.
