This research analyses the transmission of the Hermogenianus concept of method from the Hellenistic rhetorical tradition to the Latin cultural debate in the XV century, focusing on the Rhetoricorum libri quinque of George of Trebizond, or the ‘Trapezuntius’. The paper reconstructs the historiographical discussion on the question of method in the XVI, XVII and XX century, then analyses George of Trebizond’s rhetorical books and examines the manuscript ‘Latin 16,233’ of the BnF of Paris. On the base of these passages, the paper finally describes the ‘Trapezuntius’ as one of the first vehicle for the reception of the concept and the term methodus between the Humanistic age and in the early modern period.
