Funes, or on Oblivion: Borges and Bergson between Damnatio Memoriae and the Hypertrophy of Memory. The unstoppable encyclopedic impulse that in Borges manifests itself in several works and on several occasions throughout his literary production – from the aleph, the mysterious nucleus in which everything is infinite and the whole world is entirely visible, to the bestiaries illustrating imaginary beings – finds its most complete realization in Funes and its fantasy (or perhaps punishment) about a man who remembers everything. The article proposes to read Funes’ parable in the light of Bergson’s theory of memory (Matter and Memory, 1896).
