This article aims to respond to the question posed by Michel Foucault in the latter years of his career, regarding incorporating technologies for the care of the self into pedagogy, psychology and human sciences in general. Given that, according to Foucault himself, such technologies can also be observed embedded in the media, public opinion and so on, the hypothesis we have chosen to investigate is that social media enable individuals to practice care of the self. In doing so, they use “social” technologies of the self to ethically govern themselves, through others. From this perspective, Deleuze’s Control Society paradigm appears more fitting than the Surveillance approach to social media.
