Produzione e vendita della ceramica: brevi note

This paper briefly discusses the legal aspects of both pottery production and sale in ancient Rome. Legal sources on this subject are few. Two fragments from Justinian’s Digest (8.3.6 pr. and 33.7.25.1) refer to figlinae on a fundus: the impression is that Roman jurists had to overcome the difficulties of shifting from a pottery manufacture aimed for an estate to a production intended for trade. Similarly, a fragment of Pomponius (see D. 19.1.6.4), about individual liability for hidden faults in a vessel, shows that Roman law needed to adapt to new market requirements. Consequently, from what survives of Roman legal sources on this topic, we have little knowledge about the organization of production, whereas for this purpose it is necessary to turn to a different kind of evidence, such as brick stamps and papyri.
