The paper has two main objectives. First of all, to build the life cycle of three Italian urban systems (Rome, Milan and Naples), secondly, to analyze the evolution of their demographic structure. The study covers a long period: 1951-2010. The paper analyzes the links between changes in the amount of population (i.e. the hierarchy structure of the urban system) and changes occurred in their demographic structure.
