The book follows the development of Petzoldt’s ideas starting from his early acceptance of the most popular philosophies of the time: materialism and Kantian agnosticism. Then, the book reconstructs Petzoldt’s attempt to develop a new philosophy following in the footsteps of Gustav Fechner and the Empiriocriticism of Richard Avenarius and Ernst Mach. Finally, the book shows how Petzoldt tried, almost successfully, to propose this new philosophy (which he named “relativistic positivism”) as the official interpretation of Einstein’s relativity.

Abstract

The book follows the development of Petzoldt’s ideas starting from his early acceptance of the most popular philosophies of the time: materialism and Kantian agnosticism. Then, the book reconstructs Petzoldt’s attempt to develop a new philosophy following in the footsteps of Gustav Fechner and the Empiriocriticism of Richard Avenarius and Ernst Mach. Finally, the book shows how Petzoldt tried, almost successfully, to propose this new philosophy (which he named “relativistic positivism”) as the official interpretation of Einstein’s relativity.
