The upper Tigris river region (southeastern Turkey) is the region where western and eastern empires (Seleucid, Roman, Parthian, Sasanian) fought for centuries for supremacy. However, the region was totally ignored by the archaeological research until a few decades ago. Today, in the light of the numerous survey projects and res- cue excavations carried out in the region within the Ilısu Dam Project, it is possible to attempt an analysis of the settlement patterns between the 4st century BCE and the 7th century AD. The research carried out in this area may help not only in the understanding of the local political landsca- pes, but also the strong relation between imperialism and organization of territories in proximity to the borders.

Abstract
The upper Tigris river region (southeastern Turkey) is the region where western and eastern empires (Seleucid, Roman, Parthian, Sasanian) fought for centuries for supremacy. However, the region was totally ignored by the archaeological research until a few decades ago. Today, in the light of the numerous survey projects and res- cue excavations carried out in the region within the Ilısu Dam Project, it is possible to attempt an analysis of the settlement patterns between the 4st century BCE and the 7th century AD. The research carried out in this area may help not only in the understanding of the local political landsca- pes, but also the strong relation between imperialism and organization of territories in proximity to the borders.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
