At the end of the crisis that affected the management system of the municipal solid waste (MSW) in Campania Region approximately 5 million tons of waste were stored in the form of bales to be further treated. For more than a decade waste bales remained stored in different sites throughout the region due to their poor quality as well as due to the lack of local inceneration plants. In 2015 the Campania Region proposed an integrated strategy, consisting of three different lines of action, aimed either at the disposal outside the region or the treatment of this waste for the recovery of material and the production of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). The present work aims to discuss the progress in the implementation of this strategy by presenting the latest data on the quantity of bales already removed from the storage sites as well as the development in the realization of the plants were the greatest portion of waste bales is planned to be treated, in order to identify the goal achieved as well as the issues that still needs to be addressed.
