Our cities are becoming increasingly smart thanks to information and communication technologies, sustainable solutions for human activities and innovative mobility frameworks. In this context, one of the most promising approaches is relying on the Internet of Things (IoT) which allows objects of everyday life to become computing devices exchanging useful data. In particular, the paper proposes to adopt such technologies for monitoring railway systems, thus obtaining information concerning, on one hand, service performance and, on the other, travellers’ behaviour. A numerical application has been performed in a real rail context, thus pointing out the feasibility of the proposed methodology.
