Most of the uncertainty on space radiation risk is due to poor knowledge of the biological response to heavy ions. Large experimental programs are under way to study biological effects at accelerators both in USA and Europe. These studies will have to be benchmarked in spaceflight experiments, and the Moon may represent an ideal experimental base. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Most of the uncertainty on space radiation risk is due to poor knowledge of the biological response to heavy ions. Large experimental programs are under way to study biological effects at accelerators both in USA and Europe. These studies will have to be benchmarked in spaceflight experiments, and the Moon may represent an ideal experimental base. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
