The Essay is focused on the issue of the relevance of electoral law in contemporary democracies, moving from the thesis – gathered in a recent and very interesting book about "Constitution and electoral law" – that electoral matter is an essential component of the constitutional one. The issue of electoral matter in the contemporary constitutional State is conducted in a comparative key, in order to identify the ways in which constitutional constraints influence the choices of the Legislator. In this perspective, the role of the Constitutional Court is crucial and this role is played differently depending on whether the Constitution has an explicit option in favor of a given electoral formula. The examination carried out in the book allows us to highlight a series of critical observations regarding the relationship between Constitution, electoral law, party system, form of Government and control system outlined there, especially with reference to the Italian case
