Volte murarie nella Napoli vicereale. Persistenze costruttive e discontinuità tra Cinquecento e Settecento

Lo scritto presenta i risultati di una ricerca incentrata sulle strutture voltate in muratura diffuse nella città di Napoli, capitale del Viceregno spagnolo a partire dal 1503. Si tratta di un capitolo piuttosto trascurato entro il più ampio orizzonte degli studi sulle tecniche costruttive murarie del Mezzogiorno d’Italia e che è affrontato, in questa sede, attraverso un’introduzione al tema con riferimento alle sue premesse quattrocentesche. Quindi, lo studio della storia della costruzione voltata a Napoli è approfondito con un’indagine sulla letteratura locale di argomento tecnico e su quanto emerge dalle prammatiche vicereali. Una specifica attenzione è prestata all’intreccio tra le risultanze della lettura comparata delle fonti documentarie rispetto a materiali e saperi costruttivi e lo studio diretto delle proprietà delle sezioni voltate murarie databili tra il Cinquecento e il Seicento. Lo studio si conclude con riflessioni sull’evoluzione delle tecniche costruttive tra fine Seicento e primi decenni del Settecento; evoluzione quest’ultima da intendersi in chiave tecnica quale risposta ai danni causati dai forti sismi del 1688 e del 1694 con l’avvio di primi tentativi di un approccio scientifico-matematico alla comprensione dei comportamenti costruttivi. The paper discusses the results of a research study focused on masonry vaulted structures in various parts of the city of Naples, capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty since 1503. This is a neglected chapter within the broader range of studies of masonry building techniques in southern Italy, and it is addressed here through an introduction to the subject, with reference to its fifteenth-century origins. The study of the history of vaulted architecture in Naples is then detailed with an investigation of local literature of a technical nature, and on information that can be derived from the viceregal ‘prammatiche’ (local ‘laws’). Particular attention is paid to the interweaving of the results of the comparative interpretation of the documentary sources concerning materials and building skills and the direct study of the vaults’ sections datable between the 16th and 17th centuries. The study is completed with notes on the evolution of construction techniques between the end of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th century.
