Factores productivos y su incidencia en el bienestar de la búfala lechera en sistemas de producción extensivos e intensivos: una revisión

Milk production has progressed in an intensification process in which buffaloes have been inserted; deteriorating their welfare level, impacting on productivity and milk quality. This article reviews factors that have influenced this dynamic, considering those referring to the animal as those resulting from the environment. For this purpose, a bibliographic review was carried out, prioritizing recent scientific articles on dairy buffaloes’ welfare in different productive contexts. It is proposed a contrasted analysis of buffaloes’ welfare in extensive and intensive systems, highlighting changes that this second system implies, such as diet change, space reduction, mechanical milking and early separation of breeding, among others. For this reason, attention measures are proposed, such as including docile animals in selection criteria and the disposition of ponds in farm areas so that they practice thermoregulation and decrease heat stress.
