This paper is focused on a terracotta statue of a kouros found in a votive pit on the acropolis of Gelas during the excavations carried out by the University of Naples in 2000-2003. This statue represents an important element to define the ways Greek-Oriental artifacts spread throughout the Western Greek world, promoting the development of local workshops reproducing Ionian styles and iconographies. This characteristic is known as Western Ionism and is particularly evident in the case of the ancient terracotta figurines: a conspicuous amount was imported but many Ionian types were also reproduced by local artisans in Magna Graecia and Sicily.

Abstract
This paper is focused on a terracotta statue of a kouros found in a votive pit on the acropolis of Gelas during the excavations carried out by the University of Naples in 2000-2003. This statue represents an important element to define the ways Greek-Oriental artifacts spread throughout the Western Greek world, promoting the development of local workshops reproducing Ionian styles and iconographies. This characteristic is known as Western Ionism and is particularly evident in the case of the ancient terracotta figurines: a conspicuous amount was imported but many Ionian types were also reproduced by local artisans in Magna Graecia and Sicily.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
