Abstract

The present contribution, inspired by a Symmachus’s famous text (Rel., 3,10), proposes some considerations on the current condition of the Mediterranean Sea, lacerated by deep injures that move individuals and peoples away from their common roots. Therefore, the possibility and necessity of a ‘recovery’ of unitary elements is analyzed. These are peculiar to the ancient ‘Mediterranean civilization’, as theorized in an emblematic way by Giorgio La Pira. With regard to the religious component, the present Pope’s concrete commitment - directed to the construction of peace and dialogue among the various Abrahamic religions - is highlighted. In addition, the epochal turning point in relationships with the Islamic world is also analysed. It is represented by the recent ‘Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together’, signed on 4th February 2019, both by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of the Islamic University of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb.
