The paper reports on the construction of a large diameter railway tunnel located near the city of Florence. The tunnel was excavated in loose soils and at shallow depth under existing urban roads, pipelines and old residential buildings. The results of the experimental measurements performed during construction are presented. In particular, data sets obtained from high precision levelling are analysed in order to evaluate the settlements induced by construction procedure at ground level.
