The Girifalco Fortress is an extraordinary fortified building located at the highest point of Cortona's skyline, surrounded by the Tuscan green hills. The Fortress overlooks the umbro-tuscan mountains and the enchanting Val di Chiana landscape. This volume is the result of the interdisciplinary workshop and seminar that have been held in Cortona with the aim of drawing up guidelines for the conservation and restoration of the Fortress, by in particular striving to find a balance between the use of such historical monument characterized by specific landscape, historical, typological and material features, and the cultural and development needs of Cortona. The essays have addressed the interpretation of the fortress from different points of view: aesthetics, history of architecture, landscape, archeology, material survey, iconography and visual art. During the workshop, the architectural analysis of the Fortress has been intertwined with cine-photographic activities and experiences, resulting in the creation of images which, in a way, remind the observant of the deep rooted and intangible values of architecture and landscape.
