"Aspetti della 'quantitas continua' nei 'Communia mathematica' di Ruggero Bacone"

The "Communia mathematica" represent one of Bacon's works in which the reflections about mathematics stand out clearly and in a more developed way. The first part of the work focuses on the founding elements of mathematical thinking and contains some preliminary reflections that appear particularly useful, since they are mostly absent in other technical works on this discipline. The second "distinctio" of the first part focuses on the analysis of the category of "quantitas", whose articulations lead to the distinction between geometry (continuous quantity) and arithmetic (discrete quantity). In this essay, the main theoretical issue about "quantitas continua" are considered, shedding some light on Bacon's views on mathematics and on its relations with philosophy.
