Abstract

In the American pop culture “spoiler” means the anticipations related to plots of movies, TV series or video games. To anticipate story lines may seem a practice that ruins the enjoyment of the story (hence the use of the verb "to spoil"). Some viewers, however, are so curious that they can not comply with the linear unfolding of the narrative, collecting clues to predict the final before it is unveiled. The search for spoiler becomes a significant part of the consumption process, amplifying the pleasure of enjoyment itself. The audience, curious and passionate, gather in online communities interacting and dealing with others with whom they share an imaginary. The practices of spoiling, fan-subbing and file-sharing are important elements in the evolution of participatory spectatorship. A circular process that involves on one side connected audience and on the other the cultural industry, in a continuous challenge between more and more balanced forces.
