Deianira in Sophocles’ Trachiniae is a character tormented by fear and existential distress, in memory also of ghosts and monsters of the past. In the prologue appears a series of dramatic ‘inconsistencies’: however, by careful analysis of their nature and an overview of the whole drama, they clarify and acquire a sense in consideration of the strong emotionality of the character and of the fear, which proves to be decisive for the course of the dramatic action.
