Usually, building envelopes have been considered as “non-structural” components in seismic design and analysis. However, recent emphasis has emerged about the need of including the envelope explicitly in the seismic performance assessment, due to both the contribution they could provide to the response of the real building and the economic losses caused by panel damage. Within this context, this paper presents a theoretical investigation into the seismic response of non-conforming non-residential buildings, while considering also the contribution of the cladding and roofing panels explicitly. The paper focuses mainly on modelling issues relevant to the explicit representation of the cyclic inelastic response of panels and their interactions with the main structural frame. The study adopted an archetype non-residential single story steel building as case study to simulate the response of typical similar buildings designed and built in Italy during the 1980s-1990s. After describing the main modelling issues, the paper illustrates results from static non-linear response analysis. The results highlight the importance of considering the envelope panels for the non-conforming buildings, where they provide a significant additional source of seismic resilience.
